Leaving home
Going away to university is always a tricky time, both for the students who are leaving home and their parents who are staying behind. We got advice on how to cope from a student daughter and her dad.

A daughter’s advice to parents, by Kerry Price
My parents drove me to uni at the beginning of the first term. That was great, but then they hung around, so it was hard to chat to the people in the rooms near mine. It’s best if you leave us to unpack ourselves.

Don’t ask us to come home during term time. There’s a lot going on at weekends, there just isn’t time.

Get another interest or a pet if you feel lonely without us. Don’t make us feel guilty about leaving home!

It is quite interesting to hear about your experiences at uni, but remember that it was a LONG time ago so don’t go on about it so much. Things have changed a lot. Now we have a lot more debt and it’ll be harder to find a job in the future.

Please don’t check up on us or our friends on Facebook. I know it’s a public site, but we have the right to some privacy.

Don’t change anything in our bedrooms. We have only half left home - we’ll be back in the holidays, so please don’t touch anything.

We’d still like to come on family holidays with you. Don’t forget to include us just because we’re not there all the time.

A father’s advice to students, by Stuart Price
Don’t complain so much about how much work you have to do. We work a lot too. You’re an adult now, get used to it.

Put up with the fact that we refused to get a dog while you were at home, then suddenly bought one as soon as you moved out. We miss you!

Just because you’re at university studying very complex subjects, it doesn’t mean that you’re more intelligent than everybody else. Don’t treat your family as if they were stupid; we’re really not.

Let us come and visit you now and again. We promise to try not to embarrass you in front of your friends. We just want to see you for a short time and take you out for a meal.

Don’t waste so much time on Facebook. You need time for all that work you have to do, remember?

We might make a few changes to your room, so deal with it. It’s great to have a guest room at last, but we won’t change things too much, promise.

Don’t forget to call home from time to time and don’t get annoyed if we phone you. It’s not pestering. If we didn’t call, you wouldn’t know that we care.

Test-11

  1. Choose the right option:

Only humans speak using words. But all species in the animal kingdom can communicate in one way or another. Maybe you have heard about the way bees dance around to send messages to each other and the way dogs bark in different ways to give warnings, to be friendly or to be playful.

But did you know about infrasonic communication used by elephants? This is how it works

Humans hear low sounds like the bass notes in music or thunder rumbling in the sky. But we don’t hear sounds lower than these. However, animals such as elephants and hippos can hear much lower sounds than humans can. And what’s more, they can make sounds in that range as well, and they use them to communicate with each other. This is known as infrasound.

Another amazing thing about infrasound is that it travels over several kilometers. Sounds which have a higher pitch, like the ones people can hear, don’t travel well through walls, leaves, trees and so on, which is why we can’t hear sounds from more than 100 meters away. But infrasound is much ‘stronger,’ and things like grass and trees have no effect on it. Therefore it can travel much further. Elephants can hear infrasonic calls from four kilometers away.

There have been reports of people watching herds of elephants feeding or resting and then the elephants suddenly all charged off for no reason at all. They obviously heard a warning call from a long way away, but the people didn’t hear a sound. In places like a zoo or wildlife park where you can get nearer to animals, it is a bit easier to sense when infrasonic sounds are made. When you stand near mother elephants with their babies in a zoo you may notice a slight rumbling in the air every few minutes – not loud or strong, but clearly noticeable. This is infrasonic communication – the mother elephants ‘talking’ to their babies.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the congressional delegation

Speaker Pelosi. Well, as you saw, the immediate response from the United States was to stop the violence and to have a ceasefire. We – our delegation had been very outspoken, saying that this was initiated by Azeris and that there has to be recognition of that and how that will stop. What we have been learning on this visit is some of the – some of the challenges that were presented by the so-called peace agreement coming from the conflict into – resolution of the conflict in 2020 and how that maybe contributed to the violence now on the part of the Azeris. And I promised my colleagues that they have to respond to that question.

Congresswoman Speier. The House of Representatives has already introduced a resolution, co-authored by all of us here, that will say that we condemn the actions by Azerbaijan, that they must cease and desist. And we are hopeful that we will take up that resolution as soon.

As to our commitment to Armenia, we will continue to support the integrity of the democracy of Armenia and the borders and resist any effort to have those borders changed.

Speaker Pelosi. Thank you so much for your very comprehensive question. Mr. Pallone, did you want to respond?

Chairman Pallone. We – I’ll speak for myself and say – I don’t want to speak for others – I say that we understand that Armenia is part of this security arrangement with Russia. Now, we’re not suggesting anything about that. What we are saying is that the United States is very concerned about Armenia’s security, we want to do whatever we can to be more supportive of Armenia’s security and that we’re going to work to see what can be done by the United States to be – to help with Armenia’s security, without reference to Russia or the Russian arrangement.

All too often, journalists ask them the most ridiculous questions, and, when they do get an interesting question, I sit there watching in disbelief as some of the most powerful people in the country give totally unconvincing responses. It’s as if they don’t care whether their reply is believable or not. Often, they’re very poor communicators, and they’re frequently even more uninformedabout key issues than I am. I don’t expect them to be particularly humorous — they are serious people, after all — but at least they could say something interesting occasionally. It makes me want to stand for election myself!
